Everyone asks, “What is the best age to have a face lift?” or the best age to consider an Eyelid Lift or other Facial Rejuvenation Surgery)?
So what is the best age to get a face lift? There is no set best age as everyone is different. However, there are several benefits to having a face lift earlier than later. Face lift procedures are ideal for those concerned with facial ageing and you’ve already explored non-surgical alternatives.
When Should You Have a Face Lift?
A lot of our communication with others is subtle and non-verbal. Whilst there’s no best age, many people do find that ageing changes their interactions with others. You may also notice that people react differently as you show more prominent signs of facial ageing.
You can’t stop the clock but you can turn it back a few years – sometimes as much as 8 years. While you cannot fully turn back the clock, facial rejuvenation surgery often gives you a fresher look.
Further, for some people, getting a face lift can help give them a boost in their confidence. This can also have an impact on relationships and interpersonal interactions with others.
Benefits of Face Lift Procedures
The primary benefits of a face lift will vary from person to person. It depends on your skin, as well as your procedure. However, many patients find having a firmer looking jaw and smoother face can make a pleasing yet natural difference. That’s because it is often the sagging jowls or chin and neck area that gives away one’s age.
For some people, signs of ageing may start to interfere with different aspects of their life. This includes self-confidence, relationships and even career prospects. If these are of concern to you, then it might be time to explore face lift options.

There is No Best Age to Have a Face Lift
While there is no best age to have a face lift, there are some benefits to having a face lift at a younger age. Facial ageing varies from person to person. And so, too, will the results of a face lift. Here are a few things to think about in terms of contemplating facial rejuvenation procedures:
Ageing is inevitable, but facial ageing affects people in different ways
Some decide to have a face lift at a younger age if they feel they have aged more than their peers
You may want to explore your surgical options if you hope to restore or maintain a more youthful appearance
Surgical options are available if you have tried non-surgical approaches
However, everybody is different and no two people will age exactly the same. Finding your best age for a face lift involves assessments, consideration, and trying non-surgical approaches first.
Step One: How Long Have You Wanted a Face Lift?
Have you tried other treatments?
Has this been on your mind for some time?
If conservative treatments are not working for you, or aren’t an option for you, then a surgical face lift procedure may end up being your best solution.
Step Two: Get an Individual Assessment with a Specialist Surgeon
An individual assessment needs to be considered in planning for face lift surgery.
Step Three: Learn How Best to Prepare for Surgery
When it comes to planning for a face lift, there are usually a few things to consider for optimal healing and positive outcome. When you book a consultation with Dr Barnett, he and his Patient Care Coordinators can assist you in planning the best time of year for you to have surgery. For example, many patients work their surgery around a slower time at work, or when they have child care and extra help at home.
But events are also part of the planning process for many patients. Is there a reunion, wedding, anniversary or other special event coming up? Do you want to look a bit younger before you have your next professional photography session? You want to allow enough time to fully heal before a major event or photography session.
We recently interviewed Dr Geoff Barnett, a Melbourne Specialist plastic surgeon who focuses on face lift procedures and body contouring surgeries.
We asked him to describe the reasons its better to get a face lift at a younger age than when older. Here’s what we discovered.
3 Reasons its Better to Get a Face Lift Earlier Rather Than Later
1: If your appearance is interfering with your lifestyle or career prospects or impacting your self-confidence.
2: If your skin laxity is such that you have jowls; jowls can give give you a sad or tired appearance. Your skin texture, collagen and fibroblasts are healthier when you’re young – meaning you’ll tend to get a longer lasting result than when you’re older.
3: When you are younger, smaller surgical corrections may get you better, longer-lasting results than more extensive surgery procedures when you are older.
Am I Too Old for a Face Lift?
Finally, face lifts can be performed at any age as long as your health allows. If you’re a healthy patient or suitable candidate for Surgery, you can have a face lift at nearly any age. But many people find they have chronic illnesses as they get older, or are on more medications or have slower healing capacity. That may be another reason that having a face lift younger might be beneficial for some patients. They may simply heal a bit more readily or have fewer risks of slower healing.
To summarise the benefits of an early age face lift:
An early face lift can improve your facial appearance if you’re unhappy with how you look (or if signs of ageing seem to be impacting your career choices, relationships or confidence levels);
You may be able to choose a less extensive procedure than if you wait until your skin laxity or other signs of facial ageing are quite severe;
You can typically get a longer lasting result that you’ll enjoy for longer.
